We have had a crazy few days here at school. The storm was a little bit stronger than I think we all anticipated. Lightning hit a transformer so we were without power for over a day!! However, the kids were AWESOME. We even had our science lesson under the emergency light. We all came and sat by the door, I handed out clipboards for the science paper, and we had our discussions about what scientists do. We played a math doubles game with a partner. Today we still did not have power, but the kids were all troopers. We practiced read to self. We learned that in order to read with a partner you have to sit EEKK - Elbow, Elbow, Knee, Knee. We practiced with our reading story for the week - Arthur's Reading Race. Students enjoy reading with a partner - first, who doesn't like to read with a friend?, second - we get to ask each other questions about what we read, and last - we get to hear fluent reading. We will be working on our third daily five choice - work on writing - this week. We will all be glad to go to school tomorrow and get back to normal.

Daily 5 - Read to Self
By Mrs. Keeley's students
In our classroom we do daily five. One of the daily five choices is read to self. First, we pick our spot quickly and quietly. We choose a book from our book bag and get started right away. We make sure we are reading the whole time. You have to make sure you do not sit near someone that you will talk to. You need to stay in the spot the whole time. Our bookbags have at least four books. If you finish all your books you reread because if you got stuck on some words the first time, next time you read them faster because you know them. When you read to yourself, you have to make sure you read in your head.

Welcome to Mrs. Keeley's Second Grade Blog!!
I am so excited to meet my second grade students in one week. We are so lucky to be in a brand new school this year. We have some great new technology such as a SMARTBoard, surround sound, and mircophones. I cannot wait to see my students playing, learning, and being engaged in their second grade curriculum. I hope that many of my students will be the bloggers and will be able to share with the world what they are learning. I have been working hard in getting the classroom ready, but really want my students to decorate it with all their wonderful work so that they can take ownership of our room. We will be spending 7 hours a day and 180 days together on this exciting journey.

First Days
By Mrs. Keeley
We have been very busy this week learning all the procedures and rules for second grade. Students are excited to learn all about reading center choices using daily five. We are building our stamina in read to self. Students have been picking a spot in the classroom, getting their books, and reading the whole independent time. We started off our math topic with a game called "Make Tens". Students were highly engaged in this math game and I observed lots of cooperation from partners. We will continue the next few weeks with rules and procedures so that our year will be focused on learning as all procedures will be in place. Check back for some updates from students!!
